“Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.” – Coco Chanel
More than a century since Coco Chanel’s debut, her philosophy remains as relevant as ever. Yet the reality persists: women continue to face a double standard in business environments, often judged far more strictly than their male counterparts.
Sara Bloomberg knows this reality all too well. As a womenswear designer, she thought she had picked a career centred around a women’s world. Much to her dismay, it was the opposite. The higher echelons of the corporate world creating womenswear was dominated by men. Women in the industry had to work extra hard to become professionally successful while creating a product for, ironically – women!
This irony extends far beyond fashion; it mirrors a trend in beauty, personal care, home care and feminine care - sectors that primarily cater to women yet are rarely led by them. While systemic change may take generations to achieve, Sara refused to remain a bystander. She felt she could do at least a tiny part in making this shift happen.
For over two decades, working at H&M, Cos and M&S, Sara designed clothes that hardworking women wore to work every day. She became renowned for her unique ability to create striking designs that capture attention without demanding it. This, combined with her unrivalled aesthetic precision made her a sought-after designer in corporate circles - a talent so rare that major conglomerates fought to keep her.
Sara loved what she did at the large corporates, but she felt she could do more – or rather, she felt her clothes could do more. Not simply to dress a professional woman, but to support her, to bring ease, clarity and confidence to how she shows up each day.
Out of that BLMBRG was born.
Blomberg happens to be Sara’s surname. It coincidentally happens to be pronounced the same way as Bloomberg – a name that any woman in business is familiar with. The name of the brand was the first thing that caught my attention.
